Andaman Food Guide: What to Eat and Where to Eat

Island food is built around the sea. If you eat seafood, the Andamans are a treat, and if you do not, there is still plenty of good vegetarian food.
What to try
- Fresh fish. Grilled, fried or in a coconut curry. Ask what was caught that day.
- Crab and lobster. A special treat in many beach restaurants, priced by weight, so ask the price before ordering.
- Prawns. Popular in masala, curry or fried.
- Coconut dishes. Coconut shows up in curries, desserts and fresh drinks.
- Bengali and South Indian dishes. The islands' mix of communities means you will find both.
- Fresh fruit and juices. Banana, papaya and tender coconut are everywhere.
Vegetarian and Jain options
Most restaurants offer vegetarian thalis and North Indian dishes. In Havelock, some resorts and cafes also cater to vegan and Jain preferences. If you have dietary needs, tell us when you book so we can plan.

Eating tips
- Choose busy places with fresh turnover.
- Ask prices for seafood before you order.
- Carry bottled water, since island supplies can be limited.
- Restaurants may close early on smaller islands, so plan dinners.
- Fish and ice can be affected in monsoon, so choose cooked, hot dishes.
Meal plans
Hotels include breakfast. Lunches and dinners are normally extra. In the trip builder, you can add a meal plan and see the cost.
Where to eat
Port Blair has the widest choice, from local restaurants to sea-view cafes. Havelock has beach shacks and resort restaurants. Neil Island has smaller eateries. See things to do in Port Blair for more, and the Havelock guide for what to expect there.
Alcohol and beach rules
Alcohol is sold in licensed places only, and drinking in public or on beaches is restricted. See our travel tips and rules.
