A few simple habits make your Andaman trip smoother, safer and kinder to the islands.

Rules and permit requirements change. Confirm the latest rules before you travel. Our team helps with this when you book.

ID and permits

Carry a government photo ID for every traveller, including children. Indian citizens generally do not need a special permit for the main tourist islands. Foreign nationals have separate permit rules, so check before you go. See how to reach Andaman.

What to pack

  • Light cotton clothes, swimwear and a hat.
  • Sunscreen, preferably reef-safe, and sunglasses.
  • A light rain jacket, especially from May to September.
  • Seasickness tablets and a basic medical kit.
  • A power bank and cash.
  • A copy of your tickets and ID.

Money and network

ATMs are available in Port Blair and Havelock but can run out of cash, and smaller islands have fewer. Carry cash. Mobile networks can be weak on islands, and some networks work better than others. Download maps and tickets in advance.

Rules that matter

  1. Do not collect shells, coral or sand. It is illegal and harms the reef.
  2. Respect the Jarawa and other tribal communities. Do not photograph, feed or stop. See the Baratang guide.
  3. Follow marine rules. Do not touch coral or feed fish.
  4. Use only licensed operators for water sports and diving. See scuba in Havelock.
  5. Do not litter. Carry your waste back.

Timing and flexibility

Ferries and boats depend on weather. Leave a buffer, and never plan a ferry on the day of your flight. Read the ferry guide for tips. Choose your season carefully with the best time to visit.

Cultural etiquette

Dress modestly away from the beach, ask before photographing locals, and be polite when bargaining. Many places close early, so plan meals. See the food guide for more.
