Cellular Jail is the most moving place in the Andamans. Built by the British between the late 1890s and early 1900s, it held Indian freedom fighters in solitary cells, which is why it was nicknamed Kala Pani. Today it is a national memorial.

What you will see

The jail's original design had seven wings branching from a central tower, and three wings still stand. You can walk through the corridors, see the tiny cells, and visit the museum and gallery that tell the stories of the prisoners. Allow around an hour for a good visit.

The light and sound show

Each evening, a show held in the jail courtyard tells the story of the freedom struggle through narration, music and lights. It usually runs in English and Hindi at different timings, so check which slot fits you.

Tips for visiting

  1. Visit in the afternoon, see the jail while there is light, then stay for the evening show.
  2. Buy tickets in advance in busy months, since shows can sell out.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes and carry a water bottle.
  4. Be respectful. It is a memorial, so speak softly and follow rules on photography.
  5. Show timings and days can change. Confirm them before you go.

Combine it with other sights

Cellular Jail sits close to the harbour, so it pairs well with a trip to Ross Island. See our Ross Island guide. For more ideas, read things to do in Port Blair.

Where it fits in your trip

Most itineraries place the jail on the arrival day or the night before you leave, since it is flexible. Port Blair Heritage includes it, and so do most of our other plans. See sample itineraries to see how it fits.

Rules and timings change. Our Port Blair team confirms the latest details when you book.
