Ross Island and North Bay: Boat Trip, Ruins and Water Sports

Two short boat trips from Port Blair give you history and coral in one outing: Ross Island, now officially Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, and North Bay Island.

Ross Island

Once the British administrative headquarters, Ross Island is now a ruin overgrown with trees. You will find the remains of a church, a bakery, a bungalow and a cemetery, with roots wrapped around old brick. Friendly deer roam freely. A short walk covers the main sights, and the setting is a photographer's favourite.

There is also a small museum and, in the evening, a light and sound show on some days. Check timings when you plan.

North Bay Island

North Bay is a short boat ride from Ross. It is known for coral and clear water, and for water sports such as sea walk, snorkelling and jet ski when conditions allow. Read more in our water sports guide.

How to do it

1. Leave Port Blair early, usually from the Aberdeen jetty, and plan a half day or more.
2. Take the Ross Island ferry first, then continue to North Bay.
3. Combine water sports at North Bay with your lunch break.
4. Return in the afternoon, and use the evening for Cellular Jail.

What to carry

Sunscreen, a hat, swimwear, a change of clothes, cash and ID. Do not pick up shells or coral. See our rules guide.
