Havelock vs Neil Island: Which One Should You Visit?

Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) are the two favourite islands after Port Blair. Many travellers ask which one is better. The honest answer is that they offer different things, and with enough days you should see both.

|---|---|---|
| Mood | Lively, more choice | Quiet, slow, rural |
| Best for | Beaches, diving, water sports | Relaxing, short beach hops |

Choose Havelock if you want
- The most famous beach in the islands. See our Havelock guide.
- Snorkelling and diving. Read about scuba in Havelock.
- A choice of restaurants and resorts.
- Water sports like jet ski and banana boat. See water sports in Andaman.
Choose Neil Island if you want
- A calmer pace and small village roads you can cycle on.
- Short, pretty beaches such as Bharatpur, Laxmanpur and Sitapur. See our Neil guide.
- A quiet evening away from tour crowds.

How many nights for each?
If you have 4 to 5 nights, spend one or two on Havelock and skip Neil, or visit Neil as a day trip. With 6 to 7 nights, give Havelock two nights and Neil one. Havelock needs at least one night, and Neil works either as a same-day trip or an overnight stay.
Travel time between them
Ferries run between Havelock and Neil, and also from Neil back to Port Blair, so you do not need to return the same way. Ferry times change, so build in buffer time. See the ferry guide for how to manage tickets.
Our suggestion
For a first visit, pair both islands with a couple of days in Port Blair. Our Havelock and Neil package and Island Explorer follow that route. You can also design your own in the trip builder.
