Scuba Diving in Havelock: Beginner Guide and Safety

Scuba diver and fish over a coral reef in the Andamans

Havelock is the most popular place in the Andamans to try scuba diving, and you do not need any experience. A trained instructor stays with you throughout, and the short introductory dive is designed for first-timers.

What a beginner dive involves

  1. Briefing. The instructor explains the equipment, hand signals and how to equalise the pressure in your ears.
  2. Practice in shallow water. You practise breathing and basic skills before going deeper.
  3. The dive. You descend with your instructor to shallow depths, usually a few metres, and spend around half an hour underwater.

Many operators offer photos and video as an add-on.

Who can dive?

Most operators accept healthy swimmers and non-swimmers alike for an introductory dive. There are usually minimum age limits and medical questions about asthma, heart conditions, ear problems and pregnancy. Be honest on the form, since diving with a condition can be risky.

The flying rule

Do not fly soon after diving. Most operators advise waiting about 18 to 24 hours before a flight. This is why we never schedule a dive on your departure day. See our itineraries, which leave a buffer.

Best time

Water is clearest from November to April. In the monsoon, rough seas and poor visibility limit diving. See the best time to visit.

Choosing a dive shop

  • Ask if the instructors are certified and the equipment is regularly serviced.
  • Check group size. Smaller groups are safer and more enjoyable.
  • Ask about the briefing and safety procedures.
  • Avoid pushy sellers on the beach. Book through a trusted agent.

Free scuba with some trips

Some of our longer Havelock trips include a free scuba dive, such as Havelock Adventure. Conditions apply, and the trip builder shows which bonuses your trip earns.

Other things to try

If diving is not for you, try snorkelling at Elephant Beach or other options in our water sports guide. Read about the island itself in the Havelock guide.
